Joseph & Janny's Art Studio

History of the School: The Joseph Fine Art School and Gallery was established in 1992 by the husband and wife team of Joseph Zhouqing Yan and Janny Xiaoqin Huang. After 23 years in San Francisco, the school relocated to Daly City, California in 2015, and was renamed Joseph & Janny's Art Studio.

The school grew from 14 students during its first year into a flourishing Chinese art center offering classes in varied styles of Chines brush painting, calligraphy, and sculpture, at which acclaimed artists and teachers Yan and Huang provide intensive, individualized instruction and organize special shows of student works.

Soon after establishing the School, Yan added the Gallery to do custom framing and to sell art supplies and traditional Chinese art items. Through the Gallery he also repairs antiques and does chop carving.

Publications: In early 2000s, renowned educator and author Herbert Kohl wandered into what was then Joseph Fine Art School and signed up for classes "on a lark." Inspired by his experiences there, Kohl wrote Painting Chinese: a Lifelong Teacher Gains the Wisdom of Youth (Bloomsbury, 2007, 162 pages, illustrated), acclaimed as a charming and "masterful account ... a stunning gift" about his time as a student at the school. The book is available from Amazon.
